Continuing the spree of cameras put away without finishing off the film inside is the fabulous and legendary Olympus Pen FT. This camera is so cool, it just feels cool in the hand. The shutter button is this long, rectangle but still maintains the screw-in shutter release port. Even though the camera leans on the smaller side of SLRs, it still feels nice to hold, at least in my hands. Of course this is a half-frame camera, so the viewfinder and frame is portrait oriented which I really enjoy.
I originally loaded this film with Tri-X 400 in 2017 and went to Long Beach Comic-Con (which is coming back in 2025 apparently!). My thought was it would be really fun to take close-up, black and white portraits of cosplayers. I don’t really know why I abandoned the idea, it could have been anything, time, money, ambition, etc, but I feel like this at least proves the concept is sound.
In 2017 I was using the sunny-16 method to meter, but since I brought this out storage I bought a Wein Cell MR-9 mercury cell adapter which lets you load a modern battery into an adapter and it steps down the voltage. So I never used the absolutely bananas, very convoluted light-meter this camera has, which I will write-up a guide to at some point. But its very strange and I’m not even sure I was using it correct as some of these feel under exposed.
Legendary half-frame camera.
